It’s official: Tax season has arrived. As of this week, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has officially opened the doors for 2025 tax return filings.
At Bay Tide Cloud Bookkeeping, we know that “tax season” can bring a mix of stress and questions for small business owners and individuals alike. To help you navigate the coming months, we’ve broken down the most important updates, deadlines, and changes you need to know for your 2025 return.
Mark Your Calendars: Key Deadlines
Missing a deadline can lead to unnecessary interest charges (currently at a steep 7% for overdue taxes). Here are the dates to keep on your radar:
- March 2, 2025: The deadline for RRSP contributions. If you want to claim a deduction on your 2025 return, this is your final window.
- April 30, 2025: The filing and payment deadline for most individuals. Even if you haven’t finished your return, any taxes owing must be paid by this date to avoid daily compounded interest.
- June 15, 2025: The filing deadline for self-employed individuals (and their spouses). Crucial Note: While you have until June to file the paperwork, the CRA still requires any balance owing to be paid by April 30.
What’s New for 2025?
While the tax landscape is relatively stable this year, there are a few technical shifts that might affect your bottom line:
- Lower Marginal Tax Rate: The lowest individual income tax rate has been reduced. Because the change took effect mid-year, the “blended” rate for the full 2025 tax year is 14.5% (down from 15%).
- Digital Notices of Assessment (NOA): In a push for more digital integration, you will now view your NOA directly within your CRA My Account immediately after processing. You will no longer see this through your tax software as you might have in previous years.
- Expanded Disability Support: The list of eligible expenses for the disability supports deduction has been expanded, offering more relief for those who qualify.
Pro-Tips for a Faster Refund
The CRA reports that 93% of Canadians now file online, and for good reason. If you file electronically, you can generally expect your Notice of Assessment within two weeks, compared to 12 weeks for paper filing.
- Find Your NETFILE Access Code: You’ll need this 8-character code to file electronically. If you’ve lost the physical copy, you can now find it easily by logging into your CRA My Account and clicking on “Tax Returns.”
- Wait for All Your Slips: While filing early is tempting, some slips (like T3s) may not arrive until late March. Filing without them leads to amended returns and delays.
- Sign Up for Direct Deposit: With over 28 million Canadians already signed up, it remains the fastest way to get your refund (which averaged $2,000 last year!).
